From Hops to Lavender

Active and Outdoors

Start: Shoreham Station TN14 7RT
End: Eynsford Station

The rolling hills and deep valleys of the Darent Valley were described by artist, Samuel Palmer, as an ‘earthly paradise’. But this slice of Kent is more than just a beauty spot. This is also a productive farming landscape where wheat, hops, lavender, apples and grapes are grown while cattle, sheep and goats graze the meadows.

During this walk you’ll learn how the lie of the land – its slopes, rivers and the rocks beneath your feet – influences what can be grown here. You’ll discover how farming practices have changed over the generations, find out how this valley fed a nation during the Second World War and come across a fragrant crop that might help you sleep.

This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is just a stone’s throw from the capital and is a delightful place to explore.
